In this week’s Pa …

In this week’s Parasha “Chukas” (statute) we are introduced to Parah Adumah (Red Heifer). This is the strangest Commandment of the Torah which has no logical explanation and can’t be understood at a human level.
H”S asks Moses to tell Aharon to tell the Children of Israel to take a Red Heifer (which we have only had nine in the history of the Jewish people and they say the tenth will appear when Meshiach comes) with no blemish and no burden ever on it and to give it to Elazar the priest who should take her out the camp and slaughter it and burn it to ashes. This ashes then should be sprinkled on those who have been in contact with a dead corpse, which renders them impure to come into the Sanctuary. This ashes then will make the person pure again. The paradox is that the priest becomes impure himself by making others pure.
There are many lessons that come out of this pasuk. A Chok is a commandment that is supra rational, specially this one is the King of supra rational, but what we can conclude is that H”S wants us to keep His Mitzvahs regardless if we understand them or we don’t. Torah is life, we can exist or live, these are two very different things. Existing means you occupy space, living means that you are full of purpose and meaning. Living a life in which we connect to the source of life by doing His will in this world even if it’s not understandable. Because you know what? As crazy as it sounds, when we are able to connect to a higher truth that is beyond our intellect, then and only then we can really say we are alive because we have tapped into the infinite.
