In the Hayom Yom of today the Tzemak Tzedek tells us that only if we knew how reciting Tehillim(psalms) brings compassion to the world and if we could see the goodness it brings we would be reciting them all day non stop.
The book of Psalms was mostly composed by King David, while he was running from those who tried to kill him. If we read them in a physical level we can see King David’s struggles against his enemies. If we read them in a spiritual level we can tap into King David’s internal battle between his yetzer hara and yetzer hatov( evil and good inclinations). Every physical battle has a counterpart in the spiritual. King David battled depression through his life and the book of Tehillim was his gift to the world to fight those dark forces within and outside of us.
