In Parashah “Vayishlach” (Sent) Jacob sent messengers to his brother Eisav to inform him that he was returning to Canaan, the land of his father, and wanted to make peace with him. The messengers returned to Jacob with the news that Eisav was preparing to meet him with an entire army. From here we learn three approaches in times of danger, first Jacob sent Eisav a generous gift to appease him, then he prayed to H”S, and lastly he prepared for war if it became necessary.
Jacob began his prayer:”I am no longer worthy, due to all the acts of kindness and trustworthiness that You have done for me, your servant.” (Bereshit 32:11)
Jacob felt at that moment that he was in debt with H”S and his merits had diminished. His fear came from acknowledging how kind and generous H”S had been with him throughout his life and felt his merits were insufficient to deserve G-d’s protection. Therefore he made a fervent prayer to G-d to protect him and his family out of His kindness.
From here we learn that when asking G-d for something we should appeal solely to His kindness and mercy. When we feel we deserve and H”S should bless us accordingly our blessings will be limited. But when we humbly ask from H”S greatness, He will in return respond with blessings that transcend the natural order.
