In Parashah “Nitzavim” (Stand firm) there is a verse that says:”(The Torah) is not in heaven,that you should say,who shall go up for us to heaven and bring it to us that we may hear it and do it?Nor is it beyond the sea that you should say, who shall go over the sea for us,and bring it to us that we may hear it and do it?”(Devarim 30:12-13)
The Talmud (Airuvin 55a) States on this verse that if the Torah were in heaven you would still have to climb up to reach it. If the Torah was on the other side of the ocean, you would still have to travel for it. The Torah is so crucial for one’s existence that we would have to do anything in our power to acquire it.
The Rebbe Lubavitch used to say:”if your head hurts learn Torah!!” What he meant was that the best medicine to any malady, physical or spiritual, we should immerse in Torah. The more one appreciates the value of Torah study, the more one will be able to overcome any obstacle that doesn’t allow him to learn Torah. When there is a will there is a way, but there MUST be a will.
Torah is the elixir of life, it is what helps us overcome everything in life giving us strength,courage,wisdom,
knowledge and understanding.
