In Parashah Chukat, Myriam dies in Kadesh and it says “but there was no water for the community.”(Bamidbar 20:3)
Rashi explains that since this statement comes right after Myriam’s death, we can learn from it that during the entire forty years they had the “well” through Myriam’s merit (Taanis 9a)
Food nurtures the body, but the body needs water to be able to absorb the nutrients from the food. As an analogy, the food of the soul is “Torah” and its water is the capacity of the Torah to influence us in every area of our personality, in every type of person and in every situation.
We should never take G-d’s gifts for granted. What sustained the Jews in the desert for forty years:the Manna (in the merit of Moses), the clouds of glory which protected them from everything (in the merit of Aharon) and Myriam’s we’ll show us that in order to have blessing in our lives there has to be merit. We never know in the merit of who we have what we have, it could of been a grandparent and we are still benefiting from it till today.
The Torah is a great privilege which was given to us in the merit of the children, they were chosen by G-d as our guarantors because they are our future and hope. It is up to us the adults to instill this eternal values so the flow of the waters of the Torah never cease to exist.
