Evil exists solely to provide us with the free choice to reject it. When a baby is born it’s said to him “be righteous and not be wicked.” We don’t choose anything else. We don’t choose our looks, our intelligence, our health, not even where we are going to live. We think we choose, but we don’t. The only thing we can choose is right from wrong, so when Moses tells The Jewish people in G-d’s name :”See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse.” What it means is that it’s up to you, and this will help us come to realize that the challenge is to see and recognize that pain and negativity are there only so we can have the possibility of good. Free choice, in turn, exists in order to give us the opportunity to earn merits and the reward for our choices, so we don’t need to feel unworthy of the blessing that G-d bestowed on us. And at the end, what would seem like a curse is part of the system of right and wrong and it’s only there so we can get it right and at the end making it the blessing in disguise.
