The way in which G-d relates to us is through His creation. When we contemplate in the beauty of His work we develop an immense gratitude, appreciation and love for Him. We recognize His immense Kindness towards us. “As water reflects a face, one heart reflects another. (Proverbs 27:19)
What this saying is teaching us is that what we see in others is what we have inside. If every time we look at our surroundings or in our daily relationship with others we don’t see the beauty, then the problem is in our perception of the world.
The word face in Hebrew is “Panim”, which comes from the root word “pnim” meaning “interior.”
In the Hebrew language things are named after their essence and the Hebrew is teaching us that the essence of a face is the opposite of what we think.
Usually we would think that the face is the outer layer of a person, but here we are taught the opposite. For some of us our faces become the mask we use to hide our feelings rather than an expression of our higher self.
A mark of a holy person is that the inside is the same as the outside. “The wisdom of the person shines in his face.”
Just as H”S countenance on us is pure and beautiful we should strive to harbor beautiful feelings towards the world and those around us and let it shine through our face like the beautiful Jerusalem sky.
