Balak sent for the sorc …

Balak sent for the sorcerer Balaam, proposing that he curse the Jews. Balaam agreed, but informed Balak’s messengers that he would only be able to curse the Jews only if G-d decreed.
Evil, the dark side, or anything that looks antagonistic to goodness is NOT a force into itself. This is also part of H”S.
The Zohar, the classic work of Jewish mysticism, gives us an analogy in which it likens evil to a prostitute hired by a king to entice the prince and see how righteous he is. Although she uses all her seductive powers to entice the prince, deep down she really hopes -as does the king- that the prince will be strong enough to withstand her advances.
Evil also tries to confuse us and entice us into misbehaving, but it is only doing this because that is its job so we can have free will and choose to do good. Evil, like the prostitute doesn’t want us to fall. It gives us a great fight so we can earn merit in this world and the next when we choose to do the right thing.
In the case of Balaam, every time he tried to curse the Jews, only blessings came out of his mouth. This was because at that time the Jews were living up to their makeup. They had erected their tents in a way that no one could snoop at the other, in this way they were careful to ward their eyes and not fall into envy or evil speech.
It was only when Balaam with Balak sent the Moabite princesses to the Jewish camp that the Jewish men ended up having illicit relationships and idol worshiping their god baal peor, that evil was unleashed killing 24,000 of the finest men in a plague.
When we are aware of the true nature of evil, it will become much easier for us to resist it and choose good.
