“And the people were complaining in a bad way in the ears of the Almighty.”(Bamidbar 11:1)
Rashi comments that when the people were complaining, after traveling and encamping in the desert, they had no real excuse to complain. Their motivation was to find an excuse to separate themselves from H”S. By finding what would sound like a complain they felt justified in keeping a distance from their Creator.
Complaining is always wrong. If there is something that needs to be fixed or changed we should take action and do what needs to be done, but the underlying theme behind a complainer is not necessarily that he wants the situation to be improved, but he wants the benefit of complaining. A complainer is free from any responsibility, he doesn’t appreciate the good in life. By keeping his focus on what he is missing he blinds himself to what he does have.
Dangerously this habit and attitude is contagious. When someone complains about something without knowing he is building up a complaining attitude in the minds of the people who hear the complaining.
Always strive to see the good in everyone and in each situation.
Even if others don’t learn from you by verbalizing your positive way of looking at things you will at least prevent yourself from learning from them.
