A world that wasn’t meant to be is not a meaningful world. A world that was created by accident doesn’t have purpose, because it doesn’t have a beginning, it doesn’t have a destination, it doesn’t have direction and intention.
When we stop for Shabbat, what we are saying is that we are not the product of natural forces, we are not compulsive automatons acting without control over our lives. If I can’t stop, if I can’t let go of driving my car for one day or using my iPhone what it means is that I don’t have a car or an iPhone, the car and the iPhone have me. Whatever I can’t let go off I’m 100% a slave to it.
Shabbat makes you free, free to just be you.
