In our Parasha this wee …

In our Parasha this week “Lech Lecha” another lesson is learned and that is the lesson of true love. There is a famine in the land of Caanan and Abraham and Sarah go to Egypt. Suddenly Abraham realized that Sarah was indeed a beautiful woman, Rashi explains that it’s not that Abraham hadn’t seen her beauty before, but in Egypt her beauty was even more because the people there were not as pretty. So he tells her to tell the Pharaoh that she is his sister and not his wife because he would be killed and Pharaoh would keep her. Abraham knew that Sarahs spiritual status was much higher than his and that H”S would take care of her because of her merits, and indeed He did by giving Pharaohs household a plague and they all got sick.Rabbi Yossi Jacobson gives a beautiful explanation about Abrahams behavior and he says like this: every marriage has its ups and downs and sometimes we are experiencing a famine in our marriage. The best way to survive this famine is to treat each other like a brother and a sister. The difference between the love of a brother and a sister and the love of a husband and a wife is that the husband and wife have a fiery love, it’s passionate and we usually love because of how the other makes us feel also we can always choose to stay or walk out of the relationship. On the other hand, the brother and sister have a more linear love and we love each other because “you are my brother or you are my sister I Love You”,regardless of how the other makes us feel and no matter what you can never walk out of the relationship. It is the title of the relationship that determines the love , so in times of famine we should strive for this relationship “because you are my husband/wife I LOVE YOU!!!!
