Tonight is the third night of Chanukah and we continue with the theme of miracles. In this weeks Parasha “Mikeitz”, which means “at the end of”, referring to how at the end of an additional two years in prison, Joseph was released in the blink of an eye and made the Viceroy of Egypt.
The catalyst for this turn of events was Pharaohs double dream, in which he dreamt of the seven fine looking cows emerging from the Nile River and then seven poor looking cows emerging from the river and then the seven thin cows ate the seven fat cows. Then Pharaoh had another dream where he saw seven ears of corn rising on one stalk, healthy and good. And then there were seven thin ears of corn, parched by the east wind, sprouting after them. Then the thin ears of corn swallowed the seven healthy, wholesome ears of corn. Pharaoh was very disturbed by these two dreams and none of his courtiers could explain these two dreams, they saw them as two different dreams. Then Pharaohs cupbearer remembered Joseph and how correctly and skillfully he had interpreted his dream in jail.
In one moment, Joseph was ushered out of jail, cleansed and groomed and taken to Pharaoh where he interpreted the famous dreams to be one dream, where Egypt was going to have seven years of plenty and then seven years of famine and he told Pharaoh how to prepare for the situation. Pharaoh was so impressed that he made Joseph the Viceroy of Egypt giving him full control of his reign. Through his prophesy, Joseph did not only save Egypt from famine, but the whole world as well.
If we look at this story closely we will see how G-d runs the world at every instant and we can see clearly divine intervention.
The miracle is to be able to see the miracle. To have our minds and hearts open to see that every event in our lives is a pathway to take us to where we need to go.
