After the horrific events last night in Nice and everything that has happened recently it is very hard for me to give words of wisdom and comfort. I am as pained and upset as everyone else. So what do I do in moments like this? I look at what our sages have to say after destruction and pain. Sadly Jewish people are not new to these horrors. We lived through the inquisition, progroms, crusades, holocaust and today in Israel and around the world with everyone else we are submitted to extreme terrorism.
This month of Tammuz teaches us to rectify our eye sight. The root of all our problems is one and that is baseless hatred. This malady comes from our inflated egos. It sneaks into our psyche when we are not happy with our lots because we want what the other one has. This might sound that it has no connection whatsoever to our current state of affairs, but the truth is that the sickness is an expression of something much deeper and subtle that you can’t see. When we mistreat each other, when we can’t tolerate or accept that someone is not how you think they should be or they are richer than you, or prettier than you and you can’t handle it,this creates baseless hatred. The Holy Temples were destroyed and many other calamities that have afflicted us through the ages are because of baseless hatred.
The only cure for this horrific problem will come when humanity recognizes that we are all ONE with G-d. And that everyone has his lot an portion in this world to elevate and get busy with instead of looking at someone else. The day we love everyone for no reason with Baseless Love that day this evil will disappear from our mist.
I would like to suggest that everyone take upon themselves one new act of kindness every day, in which you do kindness expecting nothing in return and you do for the sake of heaven.
