So what happens the next day after there has been destruction? How do we get up and function? How do we rebuild the broken pieces? How do we continue living?
These questions have been asked numerous times. I myself have always been amazed of how my grandparents started all over again, after they were left with nothing. But they did, somehow they had the strength and resilience to get up and start from zero. They got married, had children, made a living and here I am.
Victor Frankl in his amazing book “Man’s Search For Meaning” answers all these questions. Frankl, the father of Logotherapy and a holocaust survivor who lived the unimaginable explains in his book the importance of having purpose and meaning in ones life. He realized that not the strongest ones were the ones who survived the camps. The people who had a purpose and something that they were dreaming about were the ones who had more resistance and survived. Even finding meaning in suffering is a reason to live.
“We must never forget that we may also find meaning in life even when confronted with a hopeless situation, when facing fate that cannot be changed. For what then matters is to bear witness of the uniquely human potential at its best, which is to transform a personal tragedy into a triumph, to turn ones predicament into a human achievement . When we are no longer able to change a situation we are challenged to change ourselves.” ( Victor Frankl)
