There is a minhag (costume) to listen to the Shofar every day this month, except Shabbat. The reason for this is to wake us up, it is a wake up call, so we can focus on doing Teshuvah (returning to our essence).
I always say to my students, the month of Elul is planing month. Imagine you are going on a trip to a place you’ve never been before. You would want to plan well, you would like to know what is the weather like, what is the food like, which places of interest are there to see, etc… The more you know about the place the more you’ll get to appreciate it and enjoy. The same is with The High Holidays and the year to come. If we are aware that our whole year is being decreed for us. On Roshashana our new contract for the year is written,on Yom Kipur its sealed. Everything we do this month will help us be better equipped for the year to come.
Every opportunity G-d sends you to do good take it, don’t loose the moment! “Walk away from evil and do good” (psalm 34). It’s not enough to not do bad you also have to do good. Remember you are packing your bag for everything you’ll need on this trip.
