In this weeks Parasha “Ki Savo” (You Come), refers to Mose’s reiteration of G-d’s command concerning how the Jewish people are to take possession of the Land of Israel and settle in it.
There is a verse that says “And you shall rejoice with all the good that the Almighty has given you.” (26:11)
To be grateful is a Mitzvah and a positive commandment. We are obliged to feel joy with what we are given by G-d. Why do we need a directive to rejoice, it should be obvious to feel this way when we receive good in our lives. What this Pasuk is trying to convey and teach us is that human nature is to constantly want more, ” he who has one hundred wants two hundred”(Koheles Rabba1:34). Our moment of joy is mixed with sadness for what we lack. The Torah, therefore commands us to rejoice with what we do have. We should strive to feel joy that is complete, lack of joy is like saying “H”S what you give me is not good enough” and this is arrogant and ungrateful. Is like when you give your child a new toy and they start crying because you didn’t give him two toys.
In the Pirket Avot (Ethic of the Fathers) it says clearly “Who is rich? The one that is happy with his lot”(4:1)
So repeat this saying over and over again “I am grateful for all G-d gives to me”…
