In this week’s Parasha “Vayeitzei” (He left), Jacob leaves his home in the Land of Israel and is heading to the Land of Chanan to look for a wife from his mother’s home. On the way he stops to sleep and has a dream. In the dream angels are ascending the ladder and other angels are descending the ladder. One of the many commentaries by our sages teach us that the wording of this passage is very strange. We would think that the Angels first would come down and then go up, but here it says otherwise. The Angels that were going up were taking Jacobs good deeds and merits up to heaven and the angels that were going down were bringing the blessings created by those merits. The good that comes to us from heaven was really created by us down here.
