What are clothes? Clothes is something additional that was given to people. We were born naked.
When Adam and Eve sinned they realized they were naked, a new conscience entered them and they felt shame. The first clothes in the world were made by H”S himself to give dignity to Adam and Eve. It says that right before Shabbat He gave them special garments made of leather for them to wear.
From here the sages deduce that for Shabbat we should have special clothes set apart for that day. We shouldn’t wear our week clothes on Shabbat.
When we dress ourselves with finer clothes on Shabbat, subconsciously this allows us to not only feel more special but also the whole day is experienced differently. Shabbat will not be another day of the week, it will be sanctified even with what we wear.
In Tehillim it says “Hashem Malach Gueut Lavesh”(Tehillim 93:1) “G-d is dressed in majesty.”
Our whole purpose is to emulate G-d. When we take one day apart and we take a step higher in everything: our clothes, the food we prepare, the china, tablecloth and crystal we use in our table we will for sure not only elevate the day to a spiritual level but physically it will be elevated too.
Shabbat Shalom
