In this week’s Parashah “Shemot”, Moses who’s was rescued from drowning in the Nile river and adopted by Batya (Pharaohs daughter) was taken to live in the Palace. He grew up as royalty and never really experienced the suffering by his brethren. Moshe became great and went out and saw how the Mitzri (Egyptians) mistreated the Ivri (Jews) with extreme oppression and tyranny.
And G-d revealed Himself to Moses at the burning bush, commanding him to tell his people that he will be freeing them from bondage.
G-d chose Moses to be the leader that would help the Jews be redeemed. Why did He choose him? The Midrash tells a story of Moses of when he was shepherding Yitro’s (his father in law) sheep and one sheep ran away from the flock. Moses ran after the sheep and when he found her drinking water by a river he said to her “I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize you were thirsty, let me carry you back you must be tired.” From this G-d chose Moses, not because he was the strongest, wisest, richest, etc… He chose him because he cared and had compassion for a sheep and if this was with an animal so much more he would feel for his brethren.
The biggest quality of a leader is his humility and compassion towards others.
