Last night I had the great merit to go to the dinner that The West Side Hotzoloh makes in order to raise funds for their very holy work. This organization was founded 32 years ago to save lives. It is comprised by highly trained selfless volunteers who give precious time to help the community. It doesn’t matter if it’s Shabbat or a Holiday, when they get an emergency call they run out from wherever they are and go and save a life.
These week we read two Parashiots that often are read together: “Vayak’hel” (assembled) and “Pekudei” (counting).
“Vayak’hel” deals mostly with the importance of a community, it represents quality in our Divine service, since merging with a greater whole gives the individual a qualitatively superior existence. He is now a member of a greater cause that he could not reach alone. “Pekudei,” on the other hand, represents a smaller view of the world. Every detail is acknowledged and seen in its own right making the individual important and unique in his/her own role.
We need both, the community and the individual. There are things that need group effort to be able to be actualized and we need the individual because everyone has something to contribute that no one else can give and in this way when all the parts are put together they create something beautiful and awesome which is to reveal the unity of G-d in this world.
This is why we should never feel insecure and jealous about others, because each one of us has something to add to the equation which is uniquely ours.
