Wishing everyone a Shavuah Tov! A blessed, liberating, and transcendent week.
In preparation for the festival of Passover, Jewish law requires that on the night before Pesach everyone should search his own home and car for any trace of hidden leavened food. “Bedikatz Chametz” (searching for the chametz) is a ritual in which we take 10 pieces of chametz (can be bread, pasta, a cookie, etc) and we wrap it in plastic (so the crumbs don’t make your home not kosher for Pesach) and you hide them around the house. Then we take a wooden spoon, a feather, a candle and a paper bag to look for the hidden pieces. Before we begin we turn the lights off and say the appropriate blessings (look in your Haggadah). During the search we don’t talk about anything except the search itself.
Our sages teach us that our bad thoughts, speech and actions are like chametz. The same we search our home and remove all chametz, we should also search within ourselves and remove any faults that we may have.
The candle represents the light we need in our lives to be able to see our short comings , the feather is our conscience which gently helps take out our character defects from the hidden parts, the wooden spoon is G-d’s unconditional love which is even willing to hold our leavened, arrogant aspects of ourselves, and the paper bag is were we can safely dispose of those things that don’t let us move forward in life.
The next day in the morning all these are taken to the Synagogue where they will be burnt.
Pesach gives us the opportunity to rise above ourselves, H”S is there to help us all the way, but it is up to us to do the work and then the miracle occurs.
