The Kotzker Rebbe said that the mistake of the spies was in the words “and so we were in their sight.” We should not be bothered by how others view us.
A person who is always worried about how others view him will never have peace of mind. He will always feel anxious about receiving approval from others. Sadly most of us suffer from this, specially the first born in a family. For those who feel this way keep your focus on doing what is right and proper, work on mastering the ability to have a positive self image regardless of how others view you. Most of the time people don’t see us as we think they do. People are too worried with themselves to be thinking of you. Once my teacher, Shimona Tzukernik, said something to me that changed my life. I was having a difficult time with someone close to me, and she said to me: “Margie, you are sweet and special but you are not everything to everyone.” What she meant by this is that sometimes we don’t click with someone else, and then she said something else that really blew me off and changed my life. She said: “and it’s OK.”
When I was able to let go of that toxic relationship and feel it was ok I felt as if I had been freed from the most excruciating pain.
Realize your intrinsic value as being created in the image of G-d and you will feel better about yourself and others, and remember that it is OK not to be liked by everyone.
