Shavuah Tov!!! Wishing everyone a super duper happy and healthy week.
This week’s Torah portion relates to us the story of “Korach,”an evil, jealous and greedy man who was the cousin of Moses and Aharon HaKohen.
Rashi explains that the key reason for Korach’s rebellion against Moshe was that he was envious of the honor and status that was given to Moshe while he didn’t receive any.
Envy is destructive. It is like a disease that spreads inside of a person preventing him from enjoying what he himself has. Envy is one of the three things that totally destroy a person (Pirkei Avot 4:28). The downfall of Korach was because of his trait of Envy. Not only did he not get what he wanted, but at the end he lost everything he had.
This Torah portion comes right after the portion of the spies in which we learn how important it is to look at everything with good eyes.
How does a person overcome envy? By not comparing ourselves to others and focusing in all the good one has. When we look at ourselves in this way, we not only foster good feelings but we also become grateful for our blessings and this in return gives us immense joy.
Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev commented that a truly righteous person’s main goal in all that he does is to give pleasure to H”S. To such a person there is no difference if someone else gives H”S pleasure.
When we can become happy for others success because that person is giving pleasure to H”S, then there is no place for Envy.
