Monday night is the 17th of Tamuz, this fast day starts the three week mourning period till the 9th of Av when we commemorate the destruction of the Two Temples.
Parashah “Pinchas” is usually read the same week as the 17th of Tamuz.
The Talmud tells us that H”S allowed the Beit Hamikdash to be destroyed because of baseless hatred (hate for no reason).Unfortunately, this sin is still prevalent in our times, and as a result we still have much suffering in this exile.
Parashah ” Pinchas” gives us a glimpse in how to resolve this malady.
Pinchas was a zealot who put an end to the depravity committed by Jewish men with the Moabite princesses an by idol worshiping their idol Baal Peor, causing the death of 24,000 of the finest men.
H”S granted Pinchas the “covenant of peace” meaning the rights of priesthood by making him a Kohen which gave him the ability to bless the people with peace. G-d gave the Kohanim an extra measure of love for their fellow Jews, as they say the blessing before they give the priestly blessing “to bless His people Israel with love.”
This lesson from Pinchas teaches us to love our fellow just because. The Jewish people are one and when we become divided nothing good comes to us. When we are united, care for each other and feel for someone else, then G-d gives us the blessing of Peace,
