Today’s fast day of the 17th of Tammuz reminds us of five things that happened on this day throughout our history:
1. Moshe Rabbeinu broke the Luchot (tablets) given to him by G-d in the desert, when he was coming down the mountain and saw the Jewish people worshiping the Golden Calf.
2.Later in history, the Romans breached the walls surrounding Yerushalaim.
3. The daily sacrifice, the korban tamid, was cancelled.
4. The Roman General Apostomus, burned a Sefer Torah.
5. He also placed an idol inside the Temple.
Today we fast not only to mourn the destruction of our Temples but also to remember our past and why we are in exile. Also we make an accounting of our deeds and relationship with G-d so we can correct what needs to be fixed and do Teshuvah, but most importantly the fast is intended to awaken H”S mercy towards us so He puts an end to all this suffering and restores our Beit Hamikdash with His glory and the coming of Meshiach.
