Every Shabbat blesses the week that follows it, infusing it with renewed energy and spiritual blessings to last us through the next six days. Once a month, the Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh (the new month) we are infused with an even greater new energy and blessings.
This last Shabbat of the month is known as “Shabbat Mevarchim” (the Shabbat when we bless). On this day, we recite special blessings for the new month and announce the date and time of when Rosh Chodesh falls during the morning service in Shul.
“May He who performed miracles for our fathers and redeemed them from slavery to freedom, speedily redeem us and gather our dispersed people from the four corners of the earth, uniting all Israel;and let us say, Amen.”
Then the Chazzan says this and every time there is a blessing we answer Amen: “Rosh Chodesh ( name of new month and date)which comes to us for good. May the Holy One blessed be He, renew it for us and for all His people, the House of Israel, for life and for peace (Amen), for gladness and for joy (Amen), for deliverance and consolation; and let us say,Amen.
Tomorrow is a very special Shabbat in which we should be specially happy.
When Shabbat falls on Rosh Chodesh, Shabbat Mevarchim is observed the Shabbat before.
Some have the costume to recite the complete book of Tehillim.
The new Hebrew month of Av begins on Sunday evening,July 23.
Shabbat Shalom
