The Talmud (Chagiga 5b) relates that H”S runs “His world from His place with vigor and joy.”
On the other hand on Tisha B’Av that changes. On Tisha B’Av H”S runs His world through tears.
When the Temples were destroyed the Shechina (Divine Presence) went into exile with us. Our suffering is His suffering.
For H”S the fateful night of Tisha B’Av, the night in which the spies came with a bad report from the Land of Israel and the Jews cried for no reason, He then gave us many reasons to cry.
Tisha B’Av is indeed a day of tears, but the Gemara tells us that all gates of prayer are closed on this day except the gate of tears. Today we are confronted with the truth that life is not what it is supposed to be. There is too much suffering. Our tears open the gate of mercy because these are tears with a reason and H”S cries with us. May He fulfill Zechariah’s prophesy and turn around our tears of sadness to tears of everlasting joy.
