“And you shall eat and be satisfied and bless the Almighty, your G-d,on the good land which He gave you.”(Devarim 8:10)
G-d created us with taste buds and the capacity to enjoy food. He could of made us with a battery that could be recharged and in that way we would have no need to eat.
Food is very spiritual and it should be treated with high reverence. First of all we should eat mindfully, acknowledging Who feeds us and being grateful for His many blessings, we do this by making blessings before and after we eat.
Our intention when we eat should be to be able to elevate the G-dly sparks contained in the food and also so we can have energy to be able to live and fulfill Torah study and Mitzvahs.
If we don’t keep these two ideas in mind then we will miss the point of what is the ultimate purpose of food.
The Shulchan Aruch (Jewish Code of Law) is very specific also in the etiquette of how we should eat. We should sit down and eat like a person, only animals eat standing up. We shouldn’t eat with our hands, bread should be broken in small peaces( it shouldn’t be chewed apart), etc…. eating in the correct way refines a person and sets it apart from the animal kingdom.
Remember that we are always trying to live a little higher.
