Moses told the Jewish people: “you must tithe all the produce of the seed that the field yields year by year.” (Devarim 14:22)
This verse teaches us that we must give 10%of our earnings to charity. The word “Tzedakah” comes from the word “Tzedek” which really means justice. To give tzedakah means that H”S has entrusted us with His wealth so we can distribute it to the needy. That 10% doesn’t belong to us. When we give that 10% we aren’t really doing anything extraordinary, this is what is expected from us.
The harder the Mitzvah is the bigger the merit. This is why this Mitzvah is called “THE MITZVAH” because we are giving part of our livelihood, we are giving our stress, our sweat, our sleepless nights and all the anxiety that comes with making a living. But H”S promises us that He rewards abundantly by always giving us so we can give.
No person is exempt from this mitzvah, even a poor person needs to give for this mitzvah elicits tremendous mercy in the heavenly worlds and it can even save you form a bad decree. Interestingly, when you go to a Shul you will see sometimes people that come and ask for Tzedakah and before they leave they count it and give the 10% of what they were given.
