In Parashah “Shoftim” there is a pasuk that says: “That he should not raise his heart above his brothers.”(Devarim 17:20)
A person who is arrogant, inevitably will have many other faults. He will be easily angered, he will never be satisfied with what he has because he has an entitlement mentality. He will always find fault in others and never see the good in them, he will seek honor and power, he only has his agenda and is never thinking about others and their needs, and I can go on and on naming more examples of the characteristics of what arrogance can do to a person. In short, let’s take this month of Elul to re introspect and search in which areas of our lives we could fall into this negative trait. When we can recognize it then we have found the way to a cure. Arrogance is the primary relationship destructor, as Rabbi Yossi Jacobson says ” why are children happy and adults are not? Because children don’t care who is right or wrong, for them happiness is the priority so they let go. Adults on the other hand need to constantly prove themselves, it’s more important to be right than to be happy.” So there you go! Let’s let go, become humble and be more worried about others than ourselves.
