On Shabbat we enter a different time zone. We enter a different dimension in which our earthly concerns vanish. On Shabbat H”S endows us with an extra soul which allows us to connect to a much higher spiritual state. “Shabbat is a taste of the world to come.”(Talmud)
There is a famous story of a Roman man who once partook of a Shabbat dinner. He was so taken by the incredible delicious food that he ordered his servant to take the recipe from his Jewish host. But when his cook served him the very same dish it tasted very differently. He became furious and said to his cook “that’s not what I ate in the Jew’s home.” So he went back to demand the correct recipe, they checked every ingredient on the list and saw that indeed it was the correct recipe. The Jew said to him “there is one critical ingredient missing which I can’t give to you-Shabbat-“ The power of Shabbat is so awesome that it even changes the flavor of the food.
