Shavuah Tov!!! Wishing everyone a blessed week.
This weeks Parashah “Chayei Sarah” (The Life of Sarah) begins by telling us about the death of Sarah.
“And the life of Sarah was one hundred years, and twenty years, and seven years. These were the years of the life of Sarah.”(Bereshit 23:1)
Rashi comments that all the years of Sarah were equally good. How can Rashi in his commentary of the Torah make this statement, if Sarahs life was very hard. For many years she was childless, she experienced famine and exile;she was kidnapped by Pharaoh of Egypt and later by Avimelech.
Rabbi Zucha of Annapolis explained that Sarah mastered the attribute of constantly saying “This too is for the good.” Even those events that some would see as bad she perceived them as good because they came from H”S.
The quality of ones life does not depend on the external situations that happen to us, it depends on the attitude and fortitude in which we handle them.
The Torah ideal is to make us aware that our purpose in life is to perfect our character traits and refine ourselves and every life situation is an opportunity for growth.
Sarah mastered this level of consciousness, this is why it can be said that “all her years were good.”
