After many years of infertility Isaac and Rebecca finally were able to conceive. While pregnant she would feel two very different forces inside of her. Every time she passed through a house of idol worship she would feel tremendous pain and every time she passed through the Yeshiva of Shem and Ever she would also feel the baby wanting to come out. So she went to ask n the Yeshiva what was wrong with her baby. She was told that indeed she had two babies inside; one would be wild and evil and the other one would be holy and good.
Metaphorically Jacob and Eisav represent the two souls that exist within us. They have opposing drives. One is a G-dly spark of H”S which only desires to do good and be connected to its source and the other one is selfish, instinctive, animalistic, and reckless.
When our Divine soul overcomes the animating soul it weakens the materialistic drive of the animal soul.
Our true self is our G-dly Neshama , this is who we really are. The animal soul is a creation of G-d so we can exercise our free will and choose to do good.
One of them will be ruling us, they can’t rule at the same time. Through Torah studies and acts of love and kindness we are able to give strength to our true self so it can be in control.
Like light overcomes darkness, the moment we give strength to our Divine soul the darkness ceases to exist and we will be able to use the animal soul in the service of the Divine soul.
