The HaYom-Yom (an anthology of aphorisms and customs arranged according to the days of the year)of today is very direct in the way it gives us the antidote to perfecting ones character. The first and most important thing is to acknowledge our character flaw, humbleness is the key to that door. If we can’t be humble we will never be able to refine ourselves. Once we have achieved this first test we have advanced half the way into recovery. Then the HaYom-Yom continues that it is through hard work that we can transform our deficiency making us a master of our emotions. Some people tend to only complain never getting responsible. This outlet gives them always a reason to validate their character flaw or flaws.
The HaYom-Yom also stresses that one should also recognize his good qualities. This helps us want to be better and not get depressed, a person that can’t see any good in himself will fall into an abyss.
In conclusion, your character flaws are there to give you a connection to H”S. He made you that way, it’s not your fault. But at the same time He wants us to overcome them by connecting to Torah and Mitzvahs and living up to our potential. It is through the guide of the Torah that we will come to understand that we have the ability to be more than we think we are.
