“Laban said to Jacob, you departed now because you longed continuously for your father’s house.”(Bereshit 31:17)
Jacob fled the land of Haran with his family and flock in secrecy. He feared that his father in law would prevent him from leaving.
Laban indeed pursued him, and when he was able to catch up with him he accused Jacob of abducting his family before he could say goodby to them.
Jacob’s story foretells our own spiritual journey in this world. Just as Jacob was far away from his parental home and had to go into exile and live in a place devoid of any spirituality, we too are put into this world and taken away from our parental home in heaven. We live in a place that is very course and different from where our souls come from. And just as Jacob never felt comfortable in Laban’s home, even though he became very prosperous and successful, he never stopped yearning to return to his father’s home.
No matter how good we have it here, we too should never stop yearning for our true home. The truth is that the more we realize the significance of our purpose and mission in our spiritual exile, the more our longing for the Messianic Redemption is intensified, which in turn hastens the Redemption.
