Back in the mid-nineties, a Jewish advertising executive in NY came up with the idea to put an ad every Friday with the Shabbat candle lighting time. He went to a Jewish philanthropist who agreed to pay $2000 to put the ad every week.
After doing it for five years the Philanthropist had to cut back and in June 1999 the NYT stopped publishing de Shabbat candle times.
However on January 1,2000 The NY Times ran a Millenium edition. It was a special edition that had three front pages.
1. Had the news of January 1,1900.
2. The second was the actual news of the day,January 1,2000.
3. A third front page was featuring future events of January 1,2100.
This fictional page included articles such as “Welcome the 51st State “Cuba.”
As well a discussion as to whether robots should be allowed to vote, and so on.
Down at the bottom of the year 2100 page, was the Shabbat candle lighting time in New York for January1,2100. Nobody paid for it, The NY Times decided to include it.
When asked, the production manager -an Irish Catholic- answered:” we included it because this speaks of the eternity of the Jewish people and the power of ritual. We don’t know what will happen in the year 2100. It is impossible to predict the future, but one thing you can be certain, that in January 1,2100 Jewish women will be lighting Shabbat candles.
