The 19th of Kislev (today’s Hebrew date) the Rosh Hoshana of Chassidism is celebrated. On this day in 1789, the founder of the Chabad movement,Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi known as the Alter Rebbe or the Baal a Tanya was liberated from his imprisonment in Czarist Russia. His crime was spreading Torah and Chassidism in a time were religion was considered a crime. His liberation heralded a new era in the revelation of the inner dimensions of “the inner soul” of Torah.
He was a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov and the Maggid of Mezeritch.
The Alter Rebbe went farther than his mentors by disseminating his teachings and founding Chabad.
Today many Jews, including me,who would of never had access to deep concepts of Torah and their Jewish roots are benefiting from his self sacrifice.
He saw his arrest as an earthly echo of a heavenly indictment against his revelation of the mysticism of the Torah. When he was released he viewed it as the Heavenly Court gave him a green light to bring this light into the world.
