Happy Chanukah
Tonight we begin celebrating Chanukah, the holiday of light, miracles, and redemption.
What is it really that we celebrate? Was it the Victory of the few and weak against the strong and many? Or was it the miracle of the small jar of oil with the seal of the High Priest that should of lasted for one day and miraculously lasted eight days?
The Rebbe Lubavitcher gives a brilliant explanation. The miracle was neither the victory of the Macabeets nor the burning of the oil for eight days. The miracle was that they fought the war and that they lit the Menorah. Resilience and self sacrifice in hard times, when everything seems to be lost is what triggers the miracle.
This is the secret to our survival through persecutions, programs,holocaust, the destruction of the Temples, and the long exile.
All the other nations that tried to wipe us away are long gone, but we are still here. So you are the miracle by never giving up and by bringing light to the world.
