In this week’s Parash …

In this week’s Parasha “Pinchas” took a zealous action in his hands. Since Bilam couldn’t curse the Jewish people he sent the princesses of Moab to come and make the Jewish men fall into illicit relations and worship their god baal peor. This created a plague that killed 24,000 men.
When Pinchas saw Zimri from the tribe of Shimon flaunting Cozbi in front of Moses and the great men he decided to put an end to it by killing them in the illicit act.
The Alshich commented that Pinchas zealous action was not very popular and many went against him, even though he was able to stop the plague and he was ready to sacrifice everything to do the will of G-d.
There are many moments in life in which the correct thing to do is most likely not the most popular one.
Jewish zealousness doesn’t mean we hate the people who do the wrong thing, it means that we hate the sins they commit.
For example, if a group of people are speaking lashon hara (badly) about others and you come and ask them to stop talking negatively, most likely they will be offended and won’t appreciate someone telling them that what they are doing is wrong.
But a person who’s focus is on doing the will of G-d will not be deterred even if they insult him.
When for us is more important to do the right thing than to be popular or cool we will always feel at peace even if we need to sit alone.
