In Parasha Ki Tavo there is a verse that says: “And you shall rejoice with all the good that G-d has given you.” (Devarim 26:11)
We are obliged and commanded to feel joy with what we were given.
Why do we need a directive to rejoice? Isn’t everybody happy with what he has? The sad reality is that no, not everyone is counting their blessings. It is human nature to always want more and not be satisfied with our lot.
Our moments of joy are mixed with sadness over what we lack. The Torah therefore commands us to rejoice with what we have.
If you think you will be happy when you have more, you will never be happy, because when you finally get what you were hoping for then a new want arises.
Happiness depends on the now. You can only be happy when you mind is focused on appreciating what you presently have and what you are presently doing.
The month of Elul is a month to take stock of our bountiful blessings, to rejoice in them and thank H”S for His generosity towards us.
