“Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: Every day, a heavenly call echoes from Har Sinai…”
Most people do not hear these calls, but that does not disprove their existence, for there are those who do hear and can testify to their existence.
We learn in Pirkei Avot (2:1):“Know what is above you. An eye that sees, an ear that hears, and all your deeds are recorded in a book.”
In other words, an eye is designed to see G-dliness, an ear to hear heavenly calls, and where it not for other factors, that is precisely what would occur.
The malfunction is caused by the fact that “all your deeds are inscribed in a book.”- One’s negative deeds are inscribed in his own book, in the clarity of his senses. Sin causes us to loose that clarity of mind, it makes us spiritually dull. Otherwise, we would certainly hear the daily call from Har Sinai and experience Divine awareness.
He is left with no choice but to rely on intellectual insight and he can only “know what is above you”- relying on information passed on by those who indeed see and hear G-d within the world.
In other words, when we remove ourselves from sin and attach ourselves to Mitzvot we will indeed have the merit to see and hear H”S.
