“Today I call Heaven and earth to witness against you: I have put before you LIFE and DEATH,the blessing and the curse; and you shall choose life…”(Devarim 30:19)
Rashi teaches:”And you shall choose life”- meaning, “I show you these (life and death) in order that you may choose the portion of life. It is like a man that says to his son, “choose a good portion of my real estate,” and sees him in the best portion saying to him, “Choose you this!” Concerning this it stated,(Tehillim 16:5) “H”S is the portion of my inheritance and my cup.” “You place my hand on the good lot, saying, ‘Choose this!’”
To choose life means to live connected to G-d, our true essence and giver of life.
H”S gives us the options, but it’s up to us to choose. He can’t do it for us. This is what gives us what no other creation in the world has:”FREE CHOICE!”
Life is not so black and white, when confronted with moral, ethical situations sometimes we encounter many grey areas. This is why in a much deeper level, H”S ,through Moses, is asking us that we choose good for the sake of good. Not because of ulterior motives, in which we have expectations of a reward for being good.
When we do the right thing, the good will eventually lead you to more good.
If you ever question yourself about a certain decision you made, look at what happens afterwards? If the next event is good then you know you made the right choice. But if the next thing that happens to you is not good, then you will know that it wasn’t a good choice.
Good will lead to more good and that is life. Choose life!!!
