The 19th of the Hebrew month of Kislev is celebrated as the “Rosh Hashana of Chassidim.”
In the year 1798 of this date, the founder of Chabad Chassidism, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi also known as the Alter Rebbe (1745-1812), was freed from his imprisonment in Czarist Russia.
The Alter Rebbe desiminated the teachings of his spiritual grandfather the Baal Shem Tov (1698-1760) and the Maggie of Mezeritch, who died this same day in the year 1772.
The crime that Rabbi Schneur Zalman committed was the dissemination of these teachings, which threatened the imperial authority of the czar.
The Alter Rebbe was in such a high spiritual level that he understood that what was happening to him in the physical realm was a manifestation of what was going on in the spiritual realm. He regarded his arrest as but the earthly echo of a heavenly indictment against his revelation of the most inner aspects and secrets of the Torah. He saw his release as signifying his vindication in the heavenly court.
The 19th of Kislev marks the birth of Chassidism, the day in which the inner aspects of the Torah were released to the world bringing with them a new era of enlightenment for the Jewish people and humanity.
