Shavuah Tov! Wishing everyone a blessed week full of good health and joy.
This week’s Parasha “Ki Tissa” translates as “When you will raise up.”
But in the context of the verse refers to “When you will count.” From all the parashyot in the Torah, this one seems to be the most unlikely candidate for this name, “When you will raise up the heads of the children of Israel,” For here we read the most devastating spiritual descent in Jewish history. After receiving the Torah directly from G-d forty days before at Mt.Sinai, and as they are waiting to be given the two Tablets they fall into desperation, thinking that Moshe has died. So what do they do? They worship the golden calf and fall into depravity and idol worship.
As a result of this, the tablets are smashed.
This is hardly what we would describe as “raising the heads of the Jewish people?
Our Sages teach in Avos 5:21 “Learn it and learn it, for everything is in it.”
On a deep level this means that in the Torah we can find everything. The Torah is the deeper wisdom of H”S and in it it’s contained all personalities, situations, human responses, human interactions, human nature.
It tells us about how we end up messing up and how to get out of the mess by doing Teshuvah.
If we learn from our ancestors and learn the lessons well, we can even learn to not fall in the first place.
The important thing is that there is a way to rise above any situation and this is why the Torah portion which deals with our biggest boo boo is called “Ki Tissa/When you will raise up.”
Never despair, try always to be the best you, but know that if you fail, there is always a way to grow and move upward.
