Tonight is Rosh Chodesh, the beginning of a new month of Adar II. This year we have two months of Adar which means a double dosis of vitamin joy!
What does it mean that we need to increase in our joy? How can that be possible? What our Sages mean is that the energy of the month of Adar, and this year we have double of this energy, is auspicious and conducive to build up our positivity and Emunah (faith) for the rest of the year.
The story of Purim, in itself, gives us the secret to be able to accomplish this joyous estate of mind. We see throughout the story how the Jews were meant to be annihilated completely from the Persian Empire and how they became victorious. The name of G-d is not mentioned once in this whole saga, but we can see very clearly how He is behind the scenes pulling all the strings and how everything unfolds in a miraculous way that is hidden in nature.
Our lives today are not so different from those days. In a national level as well as our personal one, our stories are full of uncertainty, challenges and struggles. Nevertheless we must learn this lesson well and we must learn to see, we need to take off the peel of the situation and look at the blessing that is inside.
Just as fruit is concealed by its peel, our struggles are also concealed by a peel.
Happiness can be learned, we just need to become experts in mastering the ability to look beyond and fill our minds with positive thoughts, our mouths with positive words, and our deeds with positive actions.
Pain is pain and sometimes it can’t be avoided and it’s part of our growth and understanding of life, but at the same time joy is joy and there is always a reason to be happy. And as Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis OBM used to say “If you have no reason to smile, smile anyways, and H”S will give you a reason to smile.”
