Tzara’as was a very unusual skin condition, similar to leprosy, in which people in the times of the Sanctuary and Temples would be afflicted with when speaking in a derogatory way about someone else. Although this affliction would manifest itself in the skin, clothes, furniture, and even the walls of a house, it came from a spiritual lack.
Any person could recognize this malady, but only the Kohen was fit to render the person impure. What did the Kohen have that others didn’t? The Kohen had huge amounts of love and mercy towards others. He would never scrutinize, criticize or judge from a place of discipline. His rendering came from a place of love and mercy towards others. He would always look for the good in others and this is why the Kohen was the only one who could give this verdict of Tzara’as to someone else.
From here we learn that when we look at others it should be with eyes of goodness and the benefit of the doubt. H”S gave us two eyes; a right eye and a left eye. The right eye is an eye of kindness, the left eye is an eye of Justice. When we look at others we usually do it with our left eye and we look at ourselves with the right eye. The truth is that H”S gave us two eyes so we can look at others with kindness (the right eye) and ourselves with judgement (the left eye) so we can constantly be refining ourselves. Not the other way around.
When we look at others with kindness and mercy, H”S will reciprocate towards us in the same way.
