Today we count the 20th …

By June 7, 2019 No Comments

Today we count the 20th day of the Omer with “Yesod shebe Gevurah” (Bonding within Compassion). And the Parashah of this week “Kedoshim” couldn’t explain this combination of sefiras better.
Parashah Kedoshim is replete of prohibitions against harming someone else. For example: we are forbidden to take anything that does not belong to us from the owner, this is considered stealing, we are forbidden to withhold money that we owe, we are forbidden to curse others even if they are deaf, we can’t give harmful advise, we are forbidden to speak negatively about others, and the list goes on and on.
“And the Lord spoke to Moshe saying: “Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel: ‘You shall be holy;for I the Lord your G-d am Holy.’”(Vayikra 19:1-2).
What does it mean to be holy? Is it to be spiritual, religious, ascetic?
Here the Parashah is teaching us that the key to holiness is between the interactions between man and man.
A person could be very religious looking, pray and learn all day, give tzedakah, etc… but he steals, or he mistreats his wife, or he holds wages from his employees. This person is the opposite of holy.
True Ahavas Yisrael (Love for your fellow) is to G-d forbid do anything that would give unnecessary pain to someone else.
We must be very aware of not hurting the people around us. This not only fosters love and compassion for our fellow but it brings true unity amongst us which trickles to the Unity with G-d and this makes us holy people.
